What is Plasma Cutting All About?

February 08, 2016

With so many upcoming fabrication businesses around Canada, it is only natural to be curious about some of the processes involved. Plasma cutting is one of the most utilitarian applications that you will hear every fabricator mentioning. So what is it all about? It is the process of cutting electrically conductive materials by use of hot plasma. It is applied on a range of materials including copper, brass, aluminium, and steel. Welding shops, industrial construction workshops, scraping operators and automotive repair shops prefer plasma cutting because of its low cost operation, its ability to produce precision cuts and high speed functioning.

The basic process for plasma cutting involves forming an electrical channel of plasma from the cutter through the material to cut, in order to form a complete electric circuit that runs back to the cutter through a grounding clump. In order to accomplish this, compressed gas comprising of air, oxygen, and inert gases is blown through a thin focused nozzle at a high speed, channelled towards the work piece. This forms an electrical arc within the gas that is integrated into the nozzle and the work piece. Consequently, the arc ionizes the gas to create a channel of plasma that is electrically conductive. The electricity from the torch travels through the plasma and delivers heat that is sufficient enough to melt though the material being worked on. The strength of the work piece normally determines the type of combination of gases being used on the plasma.

Over the years, plasma cutting has been proven to be a highly effective means for cutting both thin and thick materials. Baseline Custom Fabricating LTD. specialize in this unique trade and offer plasma cutting that is top quality. Baseline custom Fabricating combines old school skills with modern fabricating applications to offer very creative products.
