Structural Steel Fabricators – Knowledge and Experience

April 22, 2016

Structural Steel’s Role in Construction

Structural steel fabricators have the important task of forming heavy steel into construction components. Structural steel is typically formed into beams utilized in making sturdy structures like buildings and bridges. These structures are meant to last a long time and that is why they are comprised of such strong foundations. Structural steel fabricators need to have skill and knowledge pertaining to every specification such as size, shape, tensile strength, integrity, and composition of steel.

Benefits of Structural Steel

Columns and beams in both buildings and bridges need to be made of structural steel—flimsier materials are not deemed acceptable. Structural steel fabricators look to ensure durability and safety when working on every construction project. Structural steel’s other advantages include:

  • Productivity. Fabrication and inspection of structural steel is done off site and the materials are transported to project sites ready for immediate use. This streamlines the schedule of construction and significantly improves productivity.
  • Strength. Structural steel has high strength to weight ratio and is utilized whenever robustness, stiffness, and ductility are desired. Structural steel yields stress of about 50,000 psi pr pounds per square inch in both tension and compression.
  • Sustainability. Structural steel can be recycled and reused without requiring further processing. This is important to manufacturers with a modern outlook on environmental concerns.
  • Fire resistance. Structural steel is utilized so frequently due to its noncombustible properties. To heighten safety further, steel beams are regularly enveloped with fire-resistant materials in accordance with the International Building Code.
  • Anti-corrosive. Structural steel fabricators typically apply treatments to the steel so that it does not corrode when exposed to water. Structural steel is blasted, primed, and sometimes painted to reduce corrosion due to weather and other elements.
  • Mold and mildew proof. Structural steel is popular in rainy climates, moist environments, or cities prone to lots of snow. Steel is more resistant to mold and mildew than building materials such as wood.
