How to Care for your Steel Business Signs

July 22, 2020

Your business signage is an important tool to convey information about your business. Most businesses that seek laser cutting services do so because they require custom-made signs. Considering the importance of signage, it only makes sense to keep yours professional-looking and tidy at all times. Thankfully, stainless steel signages don’t require meticulous cleaning.

The following are quick and easy-to-remember tips on how to help keep your business signs functional for many years to come:

Start with soapy water

For basic cleaning, a solution of mild detergent or washing liquid and warm water gets rid of dirt and dust.  Don’t forget to rinse and wipe dry rinse to maintain the sleek look of your metal business sign. Dirty water can leave stains and spots on the surface of the stainless steel. Likewise, cleaning solutions may leave a residue that can damage the stainless steel sign.

Never use corrosive cleaning products and tools

Avoid using corrosive products like chloride solutions, abrasive cleaners, and all-purpose cleaners. They contain chlorides and/or strong acids that can damage the protective layer of stainless steel called the chromium oxide. Chromium oxide is also vulnerable to abrasive scrubbing pads. During laser cutting, fabricators work on stainless steel that contains 12% chromium or higher to effectively resist corrosion.

Do not use iron and carbon steel brushes

Iron and carbon steel brushes not only cause abrasion, but they also leave trace particles on the surface of the steel. Eventually, these particles rust and cause pitting if left unattended to.

Do not wipe against the grain

For stainless steel signs that have a brushed look, always scrub or polish parallel to the grain. Doing so maintains the original finish of the stainless steel as well as preserves its aesthetic value.

Laser cutting allows you to choose the perfect stainless steel finishing option fit for your brand.

In general, customization of business signs is easy and perfectly doable. Baseline’s Fibermak Momentum Gen-2 3KW cuts the most complex parts with extremely high tolerances, accuracy, and speed. As a result, all our stainless steel business signs are professional-looking with a high-quality finish.
