How Can Metal Fabrication Industry Achieve Sustainability?

August 27, 2020

Green inventions such as solar panels, natural gas pipelines, wind turbines are all products of metal fabrication. However, considering the conventional processes involved in producing these eco-friendly alternatives, is it possible to make the metal fabrication industry sustainable and environment friendly?

Considering the following steps could contribute to a more sustainable and greener fabrication industry.

Use “greener” metals in fabricating products

Cheap metals such as steel and aluminum are considered green metals which means that they can be produced using the least energy and resources. For example, aluminum production uses less energy compared to other metals like titanium. Furthermore, aluminum recycling saves more than 90% of the energy needed in producing aluminum from its ore. So, choose the right green metal in fabricating your desired end product.

Employ environment-friendly process

Thanks to cutting edge technology, welding techniques like vacuum soldering, diffusive welding, and friction welding are environment-friendly options now available.

When it comes to laser cutting, fiber lasers allow users to save 70% of electricity compared to CO2 lasers. Fiber lasers also use 45% less gas compared to previous cutters and are 200% efficient than the standard CO2 laser cutter.

Partner with green companies

From sourcing your materials to creating advertisements, work with companies who strive to put the planet first. They are companies that use sustainable products, renewable energy and are committed to recycling and reducing their CO2 emissions. Doing so ensures that your product and/or service does not and will not hurt Mother Nature.

Practice the five R’s

The five R’s of waste management– refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle aim to achieve a sustainable earth. Each step is easy to understand. Refuse the use of anything that you or your business won’t need anytime soon. Reduce your overall consumption like energy and other resources.  Switch to reusables if applicable. Repurpose or upcycle things to make it practical. Lastly, recycle as much as you can. Thankfully, metals like steel, aluminum, silver, copper, and brass are highly recyclable.

Without a doubt, the metal fabrication industry is essential towards a sustainable future. Although it requires a collective effort to ensure these environmental initiatives are implemented.

Baseline Custom Fabricating uses the best metals in fabricating  custom products and employs appropriate processes. Some of our projects include a custom access platform, telecommunications mono pole, and signages.
