Comparing Cutting Methods

April 16, 2019

Laser cutting is one of the most common methods utilized in metal fabrication, offering outstanding precision and versatility. As a result, many fabrication companies offer laser cutting services. Since there are numerous cutting methods, we’ll compare laser cutting with three other popular methods to demonstrate its superiority.

Plasma Cutting

Plasma cutting involves an electrically heated channel of ionized gas. This process generates plasma which is then used to cut the metal while the gas removes any molten debris from the bottom of the incision. Plasma cutting has an advantage over laser cutting when it comes to operating costs and the ability to cut through thicker metal. However, lasers can cut through many types of material, not just metal, at greater levels of precision. It’s also a much safer alternative since lasers do not produce radiation.

Mechanical Cutting

Mechanical cutting is a process which includes various equipment in order to forge predetermined shapes and designs. Common machines that are used for mechanical cutting include drill presses, lathes, and milling machines. Unlike its laser counterpart, mechanical cutting does not require a powerful energy source in order to function. However, mechanical cutting is limited in comparison since it cannot provide the same level of precision and detail as a laser. Lasers are able to provide a finish to the metal and have a far less chance of creating any sort of deformities.

Waterjet Cutting

Waterjets are capable of cutting thicker materials by using a high-pressure stream of water. Despite waterjets having superior strength, laser cutting services offer superior speed and versatility, allowing the user to engrave symbols. Engraving is a useful tool if you need to add serial numbers, symbols or any other aesthetics.

Overall, each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. However, laser cutting provides the highest level of precision and versatility. At Baseline Custom Fabricating, we provide exceptional laser cutting services for anyone that wants unparalleled precision for their designs.
