CO2 Lasers Vs. Fiber Lasers

April 08, 2019

One of the most important aspects of laser cutting is the laser itself. To the untrained eye, it would appear that all lasers are alike, but this is not the case. Laser cutting in Toronto utilizes two major laser technologies: CO2 and fiber lasers. In order to keep you well informed, we’ll compare the two technologies so you’ll know the applications and benefits for each one.

CO2 Lasers

Like its name suggests, CO2 lasers involve the use of carbon dioxide. The CO2 laser operates by focusing a high intensity infrared laser through various lenses and out through a nozzle. Since its inception more than 50 years ago, it has become an industry standard due to its time tested effectiveness. CO2 lasers are incredibly precise, offering some of the best features for cutting fine shapes and sharp angles. Furthermore, CO2 lasers are capable of cutting through thicker materials and maintaining its high level of precision.

Fiber Lasers

Fiber lasers are generated through a bank of diodes which is then focused through a fiber-optic cable. Easily the most enticing aspect of fiber lasers is their sheer speed. In comparison to CO2 lasers, fiber lasers can cut substantially faster, especially when it comes to thinner metals. Fiber lasers are cheaper than CO2 lasers, having a much smaller initial investment and lower operating costs. However, protective measures should be taken when using fiber lasers in order to prevent any long term eye damage.

Laser cutting in Toronto employs both types of lasers depending on the project. For projects that require more finesse such as intricate designs, CO2 lasers are the more preferable choice. For projects that demand speed and urgency, fiber lasers will be the more optimal selection. At Baseline Custom Fabrication, we offer the best laser cutting in Toronto.
