How Does Laser Cutting Work?
December 17, 2019

Baseline Custom fabricating specializes in providing state-of-the-art service to clients in Toronto and across the GTA. One of those services is laser cutting, to which we hold a higher standard of excellence when it comes to performing precision-ensured cuts.

For some, laser-based cutting might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie – how can a laser possibly be strong enough to cut through tough materials like metal?

Well, in today’s blog we hope to offer some clarity as we answer the question, “how does laser-based cutting work anyway?”.

What is laser cutting?

As its name suggests, laser-based cutting describes the process of cutting through a material (typically a tougher, or denser material) using a laser. The reason why machinists opt for laser cutters as opposed to conventional drilling equipment is because laser cutters are capable of achieving a finer degree of precision. This is ideal for more intricate or complex projects that require highly accurate cuts.

How does laser cutting work?

The cutting process involves the use of a focused and precise laser beam that pierces through the dense material (typically metal in the context of a fabrication shop), melting it – leaving behind a precise, smooth edge finish.

Depending on the make and type of laser-based cutting machine, you’ll be able to control different features of the machine to achieve the desired cut. Controlling for beam intensity, beam mode, focus, and type of wave length can yield differing results.

There are a number of laser-based cutting machines available – the most common being the CO2 laser, which relies on electrically stimulated carbon dioxide gas to achieve cuts on non-metal materials. Crystal lasers rely on neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet and neodymium-doped yttrium ortho-vanadate lasers to achieve precise cuts in both metal and non-metal materials.

Where can I find a reputable laser-based cutting shop?
